2016 Symposium Speaker Bio | RETURN TO AGENDA

Adam Drewnowski, Ph.D.
Center for Public Health Nutrition, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington, U.S.

Prof. Adam Drewnowski is the Director of the Center for Public Health Nutrition and Professor of Epidemiology at the School of Public Health, University of Washington. He also directs the UW Nutritional Sciences program and the UW Center for Obesity Research, which addresses the environmental, social and economic aspects of the obesity epidemic.  Dr. Drewnowski is joint Member of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle.

Dr. Drewnowski obtained his MA degree in biochemistry at Balliol College, Oxford University, United Kingdom, and PhD degree in psychology at The Rockefeller University in New York. His extensive studies on hunger, appetite, and satiety have helped the food industry develop innovative foods and beverages for better weight and health. His novel methods and metrics have helped consumers identify foods that are nutrient-rich, affordable, accessible, and appealing.  The Nutrient Rich Foods (NRF) Index, a nutrient profiling system created by Dr. Drewnowski, has been used to assess nutrients per calorie and nutrients per penny.

The Seattle Obesity Study (SOS), funded by the National Institutes of Health, examines the geo-localized nature of food shopping trips, showing where Seattle residents shop for food, at what type of supermarket, how far from home, and for how much.  Making use of GPS tracking devices, these studies have allowed the SOS team to map diet quality and dietary behaviors at the census block level. The SOS examines the links between diet quality and diet cost in relation to body weights and health.

Dr. Drewnowski is a trustee of the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) and chair of the board of trustees of the ILSI Research Foundation.  He advises governments, foundations, NGOs, and the private sector on geopolitical strategies related to diets and health.
